Characteristics Of a Republic
A correct Republic uses democratic rules to reach good results in governing. Here are some of the important rules:
· All authority to govern a country or nation comes from their citizens. The citizens give their political power and their rights to representatives, who decide to establish laws to regulate different matters.
· All representatives of the government must be elected. Family relations do not count to get an official function.
· The representatives are elected for a fixed period of time (two, four, five, six, ten years). Sometimes their re-election is possible, sometimes they are limited.
· The election process must be fair. Ballot boxes, polling stations, election materials must be put in place and available in sufficient numbers that the citizens can easily participate.
· The elections must be secret, the personal choice of a voter is not public. The citizens must have a choice and their votes go secretly to the official counting.
· Family related appointments are forbidden or not well respected. When family members are put in function, that is called nepotism.
· All representatives of a government must fulfill their tasks with honesty, the best knowledge and belief.
· Political power is formed in laws. There are different rules to approve a law, sometimes two bodies of representatives must agree, sometimes a signature by a president is needed.
